The Role of Social Media and the Rules of Engagement for a Winning Outcome
By Grace Caroline Walker
A fictionalized reflection on the emerging social media frontier
Like a debutante approaching her first grand entrance, I feel the adrenaline rush of expectation—the anticipation of stepping into an entirely new dimension of experience.
It is enticing.
It is thrilling.
So too is the bubbling energy of social media engagement.
I have chosen to dress the science of social media engagement—and the wide range of its extensions—as a theatrical enactment of themes.
This story follows people whose work and lives revolve around their interactions within social media communities and the growing power of digital engagement.
Social media is parodied here as a romance. The competing platforms become eager suitors, each pursuing millions of users, followers, viewers, and devoted communities.
The currency of social media success is viral value.
The competitors woo and win followers. They cultivate communities, establish models of engagement, and contend for global prominence.
The characters in this narrative are shaped from fictionalized truths. The machinery of social media is far too intricate and convoluted to be fully contained within one blog post, so I have created two avatars to guide the story:
Dr. Vergis Tenar, the leading candidate in a political campaign for gubernatorial office.
Maria Sinclair, his Administrative Officer and emerging social media strategist.
Maria Sinclair Enters the Social Media Ballroom
Maria is thoroughly immersed in social media—its intrigue, its possibilities, and its remarkable capacity for global collaboration.
She is most seduced by the ability to connect with people across the world instantaneously.
She studies developing products, applications, research, and emerging technologies that might increase her skills, broaden her talents, and strengthen her productivity.
She examines models of online engagement and prepares for what she considers her professional debut.
As Administrative Officer to the governor-elect, Maria has been chosen as the lead presenter for an off-site virtual meeting and webinar.
The invited audience includes the governor-elect’s advisory team, business associates, technology leaders, subject-matter experts, and representatives from diverse community constituencies.
Her presentation is titled:
“The Role of Social Media and the Rules of Engagement for a Winning Outcome”
She is invigorated by a nervous excitement reminiscent of her first dance at the Queen’s Park Ballroom twenty-five years earlier.
The Debutante
For her coming-out presentation as a debutante, Maria had been entrancing.
Her gown was the one and only selection from a wide consortium of haute couture possibilities. It was a unique design—a composition of glittering accents and woven silk, intricately threaded with Caribbean vibrancy.
The dress settled exquisitely across her statuesque frame. As she moved, the fabric flowed with every gesture, carrying both elegance and excitement.
In the ecstasy of the occasion, she surrendered to the majesty and magic of the moment.
The feast of glamour and allure was intoxicating.
Now, years later, Maria approached her professional command performance with the same determination. Her optimal goal was to deliver the strongest presentation of her new career.
She had been hired directly by the candidate, bypassing many of the conventional stages of vetting.
As Personal Staff Assistant and Administrative Officer for his management consulting and lobbying firm, she occupied a pivotal role in the organization and its future success.
The Introduction
Maria and Dr. Vergis Tenar had met two and a half years earlier at a social media networking event she organized.
The guest list was impressive, attracting more than one thousand attendees.
Local business representatives, professionals from varied cultural backgrounds, entrepreneurs, community advocates, and people of many nationalities gathered to expand their networks and business opportunities.
Maria moved masterfully through the room, conducting quick meet-and-greet conversations with her guests.
During one fifteen-minute exchange, she and Vergis discovered an immediate connection. Their initial business introduction developed into a shared vision of community enterprise and social advancement.
At thirty-five, Vergis Tenar was already an accomplished musician. He had studied jazz and improvisational modern music at the Longy School of Music in Massachusetts and held a Doctor of Philosophy degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Tenar was also President of iDare Integration and Organization Solutions—iDIOS.
The Honolulu Presentation
On May 15, 2012, Maria served as keynote speaker for iDIOS at its global strategic off-site convention in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Her presentation had been edited, refined, and scrutinized. She studied the subject matter in detail, rehearsed her talking points, and timed every transition for smooth delivery.
For this entry into social media mastery, Maria developed a library of the most significant participants in the expanding geography of online communication.
Her presentation notes identified the major game changers:
- AOL and MySpace, important early participants in the evolution of online community
- Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Tumblr, and Flickr
- Google, emerging as a dominant force in search, communication, applications, and digital connectivity
- A growing number of niche platforms designed around specialized consumer interests
Some networks had declined in activity. Others were becoming viral, attracting millions of users and followers.
Facebook: The Genesis of the Social Media Romance
Facebook revolutionized the foundations of social connectivity and engagement.
In Maria’s presentation, Facebook represented the genesis of the social media romance.
Eight years after its creation, Facebook entered the public markets in May 2012 through one of the largest technology offerings in internet history.
By that period, the platform had grown toward one billion users and had become the familiar social lounge for an enormous international population.
Twitter: The Real-Time Exchange
Twitter provided users with a continuous stream of rapid updates.
For the hyperactive communicator, its short-and-sweet format created a real-time forum of microblogging, observation, breaking news, commentary, and immediate exchange.
LinkedIn: The Professional Network
LinkedIn attracted job seekers, employers, business professionals, service providers, and career researchers.
The platform centered its engagement on professional exchange, employment opportunities, business relationships, and industry knowledge.
The Google Expansion
Maria’s quantitative and qualitative analysis increasingly pointed toward Google.
Google had become the world’s largest search engine and had expanded far beyond search into a collection of products and services that reached advertising, publishing, analytics, email, documents, mobile applications, voice communication, translation, video, and social interaction.
Highlights of the Google Expansion
- Google Search
- Google AdWords
- Blogger, acquired through Pyra Labs
- Google Analytics
- Gmail
- Google Docs
- Google Voice
- Google Translate
- Google Play
- YouTube
- Google+ Hangouts and live online participation
Even the President of the United States had participated in a Google+ Hangout after the State of the Union, answering questions directly from citizens.
The boundaries between political communication, media presentation, business exchange, public participation, and private conversation were dissolving.
Consumers Want Engagement
Social media’s appeal was rooted in interaction with family, friends, colleagues, loved ones, customers, audiences, and communities.
For its most obsessive users, digital engagement was becoming an indulgent lifestyle.
Maria’s research revealed a fundamental truth:
Consumers want to be seen, heard, shared, acknowledged, and connected.
They seek relationship and courtship.
As their expectations increase, so do their demands for more immediate communication, stronger participation, greater personalization, and deeper visibility.
Maria Takes the Stage
Maria opened the iDIOS event with her prepared remarks:
“With gratitude to my mentor, Dr. Vergis Tenar, President of iDare Integration and Organization Solutions, for his vision, leadership, and statesmanship—and with appreciation to the staff and this distinguished audience—I am honored to present: ‘The Role of Social Media and the Rules of Engagement for a Winning Outcome.’”
The lights dimmed.
Flashing beams illuminated a woman emerging through a virtual global structure. A kaleidoscope of color formed knitted pathways around the globe.
Bursting through spheres and circles, populations of global followers appeared to stream into the event.
They sent tweets, posted comments, and shared reactions across Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and other major social platforms.
It all unfolded simultaneously and in real time.
Maria was impeccably dressed.
In the simplicity of a structured black sleeveless dress, hemmed just below the knee, she appeared elegant and distinguished.
A colorful scarf was carefully draped in angular folds from the nape of her neck to the center of her chest, bringing a vibrant accent to the black ensemble.
Her face appeared on every screen in the ballroom, while her Hangout on Air streamed through YouTube to attendees across the organization’s global regions.
The Reality Behind the Fiction
Within this quasi-fictional scenario lies the true reality of social media engagement.
There are almost as many platforms as there are communities and specialized users.
Despite repeated discussions of takeovers, competition, and dominance within the social media industry, opportunities for engagement, branding, marketing, community building, campaigning, event promotion, and creative collaboration were expanding rapidly.
For individuals, businesses, political campaigns, conferences, technological breakthroughs, and virtual communities, social media was brimming with innovation and adventure.
In the analysis of that era, Google appeared to be extending the bandwidth of what could be imagined and accomplished.
Its expansion across search, advertising, publishing, communication, translation, video, analytics, mobile technology, and live virtual participation seemed almost unstoppable.
The love affair with social media engagement was in full bloom.
The Final Bow
At the end of her presentation, Maria was escorted to center stage to take her bow.
Dr. Tenar’s enthusiasm was untamed. He hooted, applauded, and cheered.
The future of his political campaign appeared optimistically secure under the dutiful watch of the woman he now imagined as his next Chief of Staff.
Maria allowed herself to glow in the moment.
She was elated by the praise and accolades.
In the exhilaration of triumph, her mind wandered backward.
Once again, she was swirling and dancing—delirious with joy—remembering the ecstasy of the debutante ball.
Every new platform had been another ballroom.
Every audience, another circle.
Every meaningful exchange, an invitation to engage.
