Culturally Speaking: Jay-Z and Kaepernick Are Not the Moment

We, the people—in America and Trinbago—must demand attention to what truly matters

Our People, Pay Attention—Do Not Be Distracted or Divided

I write as a Trinbagonian-American—watching the United States, where I live, and Trinidad and Tobago, the country of my birth, with growing concern.

We must learn to recognize when spectacle is elevated above substance and when cultural conflict consumes attention that should also be directed toward government, public policy and the exercise of power.

The renewed public disagreement between Jay-Z and Colin Kaepernick is one example.

During a freestyle performance, Jay-Z suggested that Kaepernick’s 2019 settlement with the NFL included a non-disparagement agreement. People speaking on Kaepernick’s behalf disputed that claim. Kaepernick later questioned why Jay-Z raised the matter years after entering a partnership between Roc Nation and the NFL.¹²

Both men have every right to speak. Their words command attention because each holds considerable cultural influence, particularly within Black America.

Why is their disagreement being treated as one of the most urgent matters demanding our attention?

The Human Consequence Behind the Headlines

While the public is encouraged to choose sides between two prominent Black men, a far more consequential human story unfolded.

Pierre Damas Bel, a 20-year-old Haitian student in Ohio, died in what authorities were investigating as an apparent suicide. He had recently graduated from high school, participated in JROTC, played soccer and enrolled at Wright State University. According to ABC News, the Department of Homeland Security had fitted him with a GPS ankle monitor as part of its monitoring of people whose immigration protections had changed.³

Before his death, Pierre wrote publicly about the shame and humiliation he experienced while wearing the monitor. His family believes immigration uncertainty, bullying and the monitor contributed to his declining mental health. The precise circumstances surrounding his death remain subject to investigation, but the human consequences deserve serious attention.

That is the comparison I am making.

Words exchanged between Jay-Z and Kaepernick may generate clicks, commentary and cultural controversy. But immigration policy can determine whether people may remain in the country, pursue an education, support their families or be subjected to electronic monitoring.

Private Interests and Public Power

Serious questions also surround the Trump family’s private financial interests while Donald Trump occupies the presidency. A Reuters investigation estimated that the family generated at least $2.3 billion in profit from four principal cryptocurrency ventures after Trump returned to office. The White House and the companies involved have disputed allegations of wrongdoing or conflicts of interest. These documented financial relationships warrant careful public and congressional examination without exaggeration or assumption.⁴

Washington’s public landscape is also being reshaped through the White House ballroom project, alterations and proposed renovations involving the Kennedy Center, work on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and plans for a monumental gilded arch. Supporters characterize these projects as restoration and national commemoration. Critics question their cost, symbolism, legality and the personalization of public institutions around one president.⁵⁶

Whatever one’s political position, these developments deserve serious public examination.

This is not an argument that every troubling event proves one coordinated conspiracy.

It is an argument about attention.

Who benefits when people become consumed by personalities while policy proceeds with limited scrutiny?

Who benefits when Black cultural figures are presented as opposing teams while immigration protections, voting systems, public institutions, government contracts and private financial interests receive only passing attention?

The Mitch McConnell Indicator

And let us not overlook the Mitch McConnell indicator.

Senator Mitch McConnell, now 84, has remained away from the Senate and largely outside public view while recovering from a fall and pneumonia. His office says he continues to conduct Senate business during rehabilitation, but his prolonged absence, missed votes and the limited information initially provided to the public prompted questions about transparency, representation and his capacity to continue serving.⁷⁸

This is not about ridiculing age, illness or disability. It is about accountability. No elected official—Republican, Democrat or otherwise—should be treated merely as a name, a seat or a political symbol while constituents are left uncertain about whether that person can fully perform the duties of public office.

When political institutions appear more concerned with preserving appearances than providing clear answers, people have reason to pay closer attention. The public has a right to know who is actively governing, who is making decisions and whether those entrusted with power remain capable of answering to those they represent.

America’s response must remain constitutional and civic: informed participation, peaceful organizing, public accountability and engagement at the ballot box. Elections are the lawful means through which citizens select their representatives and hold government accountable.

Trinidad and Tobago Must Also Pay Attention

The country’s political history contains persistent racial and ethnic divisions, especially through the traditional constituencies associated with the PNM and UNC. The BTI 2026 country report identifies those ethnic affiliations as a significant division within Trinidad and Tobago’s political culture.⁹

When any political leadership uses race, color, class, fear or cultural suspicion to separate citizens, people should examine the claims carefully and refuse to be manipulated.

Trinidad and Tobago should not reproduce the most destructive features of American political polarization. Afro-Trinidadians, Indo-Trinidadians, Syrians, Lebanese, Tobagonians, migrants and every other community must not be turned against one another for political advantage.

Choose to be informed. Choose to be vocal. Choose to participate. Choose to question both government and media.

Jay-Z and Colin Kaepernick can answer each other. That is their right.

But we, the people, must continue to question power.

We must not surrender our attention to spectacle while decisions affecting human dignity, constitutional government and national sovereignty are being made around us.

From the United States to Trinidad and Tobago, this is a Trinbagonian-American on watchful alert.

Our attention is political power. Let us be careful where we place it.
